Smart Phone Apps for Students

As technology changes, educators need to embrace some of the new ways students are learning. Here are 10 apps that students can use to help increase productivity and academic success.


1. MathFormulary - This application contains most of the math formulas that students would use in high school or college. Since math is traditionally a subject that more students struggle with it might be worth it to keep this app handy.
2. Algeo - Algeo is a graphing calculator application for the smart phone. This can eliminate students having to carry around a bulky graphing calculator in addition to their phone.
3. Wikipedia Mobile - Although wikipedia is not a librarian or teachers first choice in scholarly research, it can provide very basic information to students in a hurry. If a student is wanting the very basic background information on a topic, this could be a good choice on the go.
4. gFlash - This application can help students create flash cards for studying on their phone. Since students usually have their phones with them rather than a backpack or textbook, this is a good way to get extra study time in.
5. Stanza - This application is at the top of the free ebook applications list. This will allow students to increase productivity by being able to have access to multiple books at one time while they are mobile.
6. Google Docs - This application is a must for students who work on projects, papers and group work in multiple settings. Having this application means that students can access their information from anywhere at any time.
7. iStudiezPro - Students need a way to stay organized with all of the homework and activities they are involved in. The traditional written planners are out of date and many students choose to use their phone for planning and organization. This application is geared toward students and is user friendly.
8. Evernote - You can take notes, take photos, create voice recordings and more with this app. This would be very helpful for students to keep track of to-do lists and classwork.
9. Gabcast - This easy to use podcasting tool would be great for student projects. Creating podcasts has become a popular classroom extension and this application makes it easy to create your own podcast for class.
10. Skype - This application is changing and advancing everyday. There is hope that soon users will be able to have face to face calls using Skype on their smart phone. This tool would be great for students doing group projects or who could not be in class for a period of time. This tool can be used for any type of collaboration.
